THE PCOC: A REAL MUST

If you work on a beach, or have friends or family with whom you enjoy the waters on their boat, having a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) could prove extremely useful. Now that you can obtain this card by following the course and taking the exam from the comfort of your own home, there’s no more reason to hesitate.

Some facts about the PCOC:

  • It never expires.
  • The total cost ($49.99) includes the course, Transport Canada’s official exam and the card.
  • You can follow the course at your own pace with some forty HD videos about the material required on board, the Collision Regulations, buoyage, and safety on board.
  • The exam is in an open book, multiple choice format.
  • All exam retakes are free.
  • As soon as you successfully pass the exam (at least a 75% grade), you can print your temporary card at home while the official one is being delivered. The official card will be delivered in less than a month.

All power-driven boat (pontoon, sailboat, personal watercraft, yacht, etc.) operators sailing on Canadian waters are required by law to hold a proof of competency. And here’s where things really get interesting: the PCOC is the most widespread proof in Canada, and it’s so easy to obtain! Whether it’s to improve your resume, to borrow a friend’s boat or to make sure there’s more than one person on board who has the necessary proof of competency, getting a PCOC is always a good move.
